Win Maui, Win The World Title... Again

As you’re reading this, Tyler Wright is most likely getting barrelled inside a long, hollow tube at HonoluaBay, with visions of her second World Title dancing through her head. The first real swell of the Hawaiian winter is hitting the shores of Maui, and alongside her Rip Curl teammates Nikki van Dijk, Pauline Ado and Alyssa Spencer, Tyler is there to reap the benefits.

But it wasn’t exactly a strike mission. See, the reigning World Champion has situated herself on Oahu’s North Shore for the past few weeks, spending hours upon hours in the water and in the training gym, preparing to do battle in Maui. She’s also been eating broccoli, which is unheard of –and that alone should be enough to scare the other World Title contenders.

Speaking of which, here’s the scenario...

If Tyler wins in Maui, she wins the title.

But! If she finishes......

  • 2nd, Sally Fitzgibbons and Courtney Conlogue can’t make the final...
  • 3rd, Sally can’t make Final...
  • 5th, Sally and Courtney can’t make the Semis, and Stephanie Gilmore and Carissa Moore can’t win

If Tyler’s track record at the Maui Women’s Pro is anything to go off – she won the event last year – she’s going to put up one helluva fight.

Tune in the World Surf League from November 25th to December 6th. We’re in for a World Title showdown, and our money’s on Tyler Wright. And in the meantime, check in to @ripcurl_aus and @ripcurl_women to see what Tyler’s been up to in Maui (just try to count the barrels –we dare you)
